Flowers offer rewards (pollen rich in protein, lipids, vitamins and
minerals, and nectar) to would-be pollinators in exchange for helping them
fertilize their eggs and produce seeds. The trick is to somehow lure the
pollinator to the flower so fertilization can be accomplished. To do this
plants have evolved visual attractions including flowers with showy petals
and sepals, nectar guides, and even unique shapes, sizes and colors. They
can also use the flower's smell (both good and bad) to entice a pollinator
to partake of its treasures.
But flowers have another amazing trick up their sleeve - electrical
charges! And, if you don't believe me, just ask Sir David Attenborough:

It is truly an enchanted AND enchanting world!
Come join us on this Sunday's (9/8) Interpretive Walk at the Montezuma
Refuge in Seneca Falls, NY, as we continue exploring the myriad, and often
fascinating interconnections between the living and non-living components
of our environment.
Walks are free; no sign-ups necessary; and begin at 10am at the Visitor
Center. The path is a level, easy one and walks last anywhere from 1.5- 3
hours depending on what we encounter and where we linger.
Hope to see you there.
