Luckily, I was looking out my back window towards my bird feeders an hour ago, when all of a sudden a juvenile red-tailed hawk swooped back and forth through “my” backyard, and then flew across the road into the tall trees to the west of Kendal.
I ran outside to “my” backyard to see if it would return. Almost immediately, I heard what I thought was the characteristic ‘scream’ of a red tail hawk, quite close to me. I looked up in the trees from where the sound came and saw no hawk, but I did see a Blue Jay! then the Blue Jay hopped to a lower branch right in front of me and did the “red tail hawk imitation scream” again. then he gave two rather different “warning” calls that I don’t usually hear Blue Jays make. He/she was warning avian fellows that the hawk was in the area! I have heard/seen Blue Jays do this at my former home by the lake in Lansing. I entered this account in eBird for the GBBC, too.
