Dear all
for those of you who havent heard about this yet, Creative Commons
will co-host with ICT Qatar two important events in Doha, Qatar, on
23-24 Oct.
On the 23rd, "Digitally Open" http://www.ictqatar.qa/output/Page1988.asp
is a forum about creativity, openness and innovation featuring keynote
speakers as our CC CEO Joichi Ito, Mozilla Foundation Chairperson
Mitchell Baker and the Google "open source man", Chris di Bona.
The forum is the first one ever in the Arab region addressing how
innovation can thrive in the digital age through sharing and openness.
It will highlight "best practises" of the use of CC licenses within
governments like India (Sunil Abhraham) and the Netherlands (Paul
Keller) and in fields like art and education (Eric Steur, Creative
director at CC) and science and technology (John Wilbanks, Vice
President for Science at CC).
Many local speakers from Qatar, like Dr. Hessa Al Jaber, Secretary
General, ictQATAR, will talk about the digital and open framework
which is being built by Qatar. Speakers like Roger Mandle, Director,
Qatar Museum Authority, will discuss potential applications of open
licensing to art and heritage, as others will be doing for science and
technology, etc.
An "hands on" workshop on open source development will be lead by
Bassel Safadi and the fabricatorz team with the kind support of
Mahmoud Abu Wardeh and Issa Mashaneh from the Jordan Open Source
Association.

Thanks to the great support of ICT Qatar, Doha will also host the
Second Creative Commons Regional Arab meeting. Official CC affiliates
from Egypt, Syria, Lebanon will be joining, together with many
supportive lawyers and community people from Jordan, the UAE and
Qatar. Many issues will be discussed concerning the future development
of CC communities in the Arab world. We`ll post about the outcomes
once the meeting is over so everybody in our regional community can be
aware of the steps undertaken.

Next year we hope to have more countries joining, but so far we have
been receiving enquiries from countries like Iraq and Palestine to be
involved more into regional activities, I hope that soon we`ll have
more Northern African countries joining ,too inshallah

I`d like to thank ICT Qatar for the wonderful support, openness,
bright thoughts, and friendship that they have shown in organising
these events.
Stay tuned for more updates and for those of you who are in Qatar see
you on 23 rd inshallah

salam
d.
