Subject: [cc-arab-world] CC regional meeting in Iraq: wanna join?

Dear all
hope this mail finds you all well
It`s indeed a very busy period for all that`s happening in many countries in
the region..we hope the best for our brothers and sisters in Libya, Egypt,
Tunis, Yemen, Bahrain and all the other countries where people are fighting
for their rights
Indeed, I`m trying to move our work forward particularly cause we have a
project in the pipeline that is gonna be very important for the future of
our Arab community
We have many people in our community in Iraq but, due to many security and
political issues, it has been difficult to stay connected.
We have now the opportunity to organize our third regional Arab world
meeting in Iraq. We have found some generous donors that will help
organizing this and making it happen. We`ve been talking about how to make
the regional meeting not only an opportunity for different countries to meet
up, share ideas and thoughts and discuss about how to move on CC work..but
also something more "practical"..
We would like to try to build from the mistakes of the past, as many within
the community have pointed out the necessity to have more time in regional
meetings to actually do things together, in a practical way rather than just
holding a plenary discussion
We have been also thinking how to make the meeting more open to the
community, despite the budget constraints that are always to be there
So here`s the proposal:
-there is a date, 17th May: Lessig, CC founder, has agreed to be in Iraq
that day, give a keynote lecture, and then chair a plenary session with you
all from the Arab world community..we can build the agenda for this all
together
- the CC Regional Meeting would not be only a meeting among the CC Arab
communities but a series of workshops led by people from inside the Arab
community. Many Iraqis (from lawyers, to musicians, to journalists and
bloggers) have asked to learn more about CC through the other Arabs`
experiences in applying CC to music, visual arts, films, education, etc
- the idea would then be to hold parallel workshops in different disciplines
(a couple of days each), each of them open to about 15-20 people from the
Iraqi community
- it would be great if each of you who is interested in joining these
meetings (which will likely be about 4-5 days in total mid-May in Iraq)
could send me a workshop proposal, articulated in bullet points (items you
would like to talk about during the workshop, community the workshop
addresses to, etc). All workshops should be in Arabic and of course you can
ask to have supports like screens, computers etc
- topics of the workshops could be everything related to CC -applied to
different disciplines- and open source. Workshops should be "hands on" in
order to teach people stuff, i.e. how to apply CC licenses to music and make
a remix, etc
- each workshop can have one or more instructors, according to the topic.
You are welcome to present team proposals
- we have budget to invite around 30 people coming from the Region: most of
the participants attending the plenary session of the Regional meeting will
be the same people that are leading the workshops. This way it will be much
easier to choose the participants without discriminating anybody. Each one
who has got a proposal and wants to share his/her skills would be rather
also be chosen to participate to the Regional meeting as a representative of
his-her community-country
- the donors will cover travel, accommodation in a very good hotel,
insurance and an honorarium for the workshops instructors
- it looks like this is gonna happen in Erbil, mostly for security reasons
(moving 30 and more people around in Baghdad would be kind of complicated
for our hosts which have to take care of everybody`s security) and also to
be more free to hang out by ourselves (something that our hosts cannot grant
for Baghdad as we are under their responsibility)
- the hosts have kindly agreed that, even if we do this in Erbil, they will
make sure people from other cities (Najaf, Baghdad, etc) can attend our
workshops (at the hosts` expenses) and stay with us for 4-5 days so to
create connections all across Iraq
- the selection process of the workshops participants will be followed by
all of us in transparency, so each of you who submit a workshop proposal is
also welcomed to propose a criteria for the selection (skills that
participants should have etc)

we can discuss all this in more details but now I`ll stop since this email
is too long!
pls each of you, from all different arab countries, is very much welcomed to
join!
looking forward to your feedback
dona
