Hi,

It doesn't really matter which IGP you use for basic MPLS, as long as you have an IGP which LDP can use for detecting the correct prefixes and assign a label. When using Traffic Engineering it's required to have a Link State protocol and you definitely want IS-IS, it's way more scalable in a single area than OSPF, which is the preferred way of doing TE as you have the entire overview of the network. It's possible to do inter-area TE, but that's not really advisable as you give a little bit of control out of your hands by delegating it to the ABR's.

But you are right that IS-IS is the preferred protocol to use in big SP networks :-)

I think the best IGP for MPLS backbone is IS-IS because it can support more devices per area than OSPF. BGP is good but we can make confusion when deploy BGP and MP-BGP. For less errors and more security it's better to use IS-IS.
