Nadeem, Definitely catching this early on is very important. I have what is called golfers elbow now in my left arm due to studying for my CCIE's ;). In fact I just had a cortisone shot in my elbow and am going back today to the doctor to have some nerve testing done to see if there may be a pinched nerve. So I am on the bad spectrum of what can happen if you don't take care of it early on. (My condition is also worsened by several mountain bike accidents when I used to race and hyper-extensions of the elbow from when I played a lot of volleyball in college.)
My recommendation is to get a guide on proper ergonomics and stick to it. I know this may seem silly but it is so important. Make sure just as Scott said below that your keyboard is properly in line with your arms in a relaxed position and that your monitor and everything is in line with good body alignment. Two things that have been a tremendous help to me is a good keyboard and mouse as well. I purchased the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 for myself and a Logitech MX Revolution Mouse. The keyboard I have is the best keyboard I have ever owned hands down. The typing is very natural and I know this seems like a little thing but one button shortcuts on it are a life saver. instead of doing ctrl-c ctrl-v for copy and paste the function keys are remapped to do it in one keystroke. I wish I had that feature 5 years ago and I wouldn't have my problems now. I think having the keyboard I have would be one of the biggest helps. Not sure if it works natively with Linux, as I mostly use Linux from remote terminal. Also stopping every so often and doing stretching exercises on your arms will help a lot with the tension as well. pulling your fingers back up over your hand bending at your wrist and then doing it downward helps to loosen a lot of the tension in your forearms. It is more likely the pressure on your arms (how you sit) that is compressing the nerves/blood flow to your hand/fingers. Start with your sitting arrangement. Good chair, proper height compared to keyboard... Then go from there. Changing the keyboard may change your position, but that may also be starting at the wrong end. Otherwise, just "normal" nutritional habits are probably a good idea. Water would be nice. Mountain Dew works for me. ;) Why are you doing CCIE while you are married? Is that the question? It's probably the answer then too! You are doing the CCIE BECAUSE you are married. :) An exvuse for a good chunk of personal/alone time. Much less volatile than picking up girlfriends... Ask Tiger Woods! In the same genre, your wife may beat you with a router should you get a girlfriend! I occionally change my mouse hand after every few months. I am good at right and left hands with mouse. I will consider using an alternative to built in keyboard. I have purchased a very comfortable table for laptop. This helped a lot. I use more than 3 liters of water a day... it helps a lot to control high blood pressure. I dont drink, neither smoke and no girlfriends (i'm married).
