The nook color is nice and if you root it you can install the android reader. 
It works well and is not too pricey.

I tried a Sony E-Reader but found the PDF rendering very weak with the diagrams 
difficult and cumbersome to view. The ability to resize with these iPad-type 
devices is wonderful. Seriously, how often are you going to be studying in 
direct sunlight?  Sunlight causes late collisions, doesn't it?
