Personally I use expect for everything I do.  Rancid is basically just a 
frontend to expect.  If you ever look into the interworking of Cisco tools they 
typically run a lot of expect scripts as well.  So I just forego all the 
overhead and get it to do everything I want with expect.  A simple program to 
backup configurations is very easy.
