The only thing I will add here is that you have 18 months for the initial attempt. You then have to make another attempt within 12 months. So here are the maximums of the rule
6/1 take written pass; Must take exam by 12/1/2012, if you fail you then have until 12/1/2013 until you are required again to take the exam to extend your written. then on 6/1/2014 your written would expire if you still haven't attempted and passed. But on the flip side you could pass the written today, take the exam tomorrow and have your written expire on 6/3/2012 if you don't take your exam again before that time.
