Guys, I was expecting the router will send ICMP host unreachable if the packet is sent to it to the destination the router doesn't have any route. Instead I see that it sends ICMP time exceeded:
ICMP: time exceeded (time to live) sent to 141.1.25.2 (dest was 100.100.100.1) And hence the task to stop sending ICMP unreachables doesn't work. Is there something I can verify? Or rather I should have formulated the question about the conditions when the ICMP unreachable or host unreachable are sent. ICMP unreachables are allowed on the interface in question: R5#sh ip int Ser0/0/1 Serial0/0/1 is up, line protocol is up Internet address is 141.1.25.5/24 Broadcast address is 255.255.255.255 Address determined by non-volatile memory MTU is 1500 bytes Helper address is not set Directed broadcast forwarding is disabled Outgoing access list is not set Inbound access list is not set Proxy ARP is enabled Local Proxy ARP is disabled Security level is default Split horizon is enabled ICMP redirects are always sent ICMP unreachables are always sent ICMP mask replies are never sent Eugene
