thanks for the explanation!
Actually that was what I thought too, but during a installation at a customer I 
could see that many XP clients could not connect to the wireless network if 
"802.1x/CCKM" was chosen. As soon as I reverted back to "802.1x only" 
everything worked fine.
Unfortunately I did not have the time to debug this a bit more.

If I get the chance to find out more about this, I will let you know.

This depends on the client you want to "allow" on the WLAN:

802.1x (only): if there are only non-CCKM clients (< CCXv4), then you don't 
need to enable CCKM

CCKM (only): here, only CCKM clients (> CCXv4) can associate, so you don't 
allow older clients without CCKM support

802.1x / CCKM: I think this is the common way to configure a normal WLAN, so 
you allow older, non-CCKM and newer, CCKM clients
