AE serves a lot of purposes. 

Devices that are CCX compatible also can take advantage of some of the Aironet 
Extension features. Here is a list of the features available with the different 
versions of Cisco Compatible Extensions:

Easy way to test this ... Disable extenions on your CCX client and connect with 
your supplicant and check the AP details and then ENABLE AE and do the same. 
You will see more detailed information.
