Hey guys,

I have some questions and probable pointers regarding the solution guide fpr
Volue I - Detailed Solutions Guide:
(I downloaded the most recent one just to be sure)

LAB 1:

1.1 Interface Configuration:

question 2: Configure the links to the WLC's such that there is no negotiation
on the links:

Proposed solution 2 configured ports examples page 19 on the full-DSG document:

2106:
!
Interface f0/11
description WLC5 po1
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport mode trunk
switchport nonegotiates
speed 100
duplex full
spanning-tree portfast trunk
!
4400's page 20:
!
Interface Gigabitethernet0/2
description WLC1 po2
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport mode trunk
switchport nonegotiate
speed nonegotiate
spanning-tree portfast trunk
!

I feel that it should be mentioned that the WLC's have
automatic negotiation enabled. So won´t that be a problem
if one end sets 100/full or disables negotiation for speed and duplex ?
(always set the same settings on both ends when disabling auto negotiation)

I would personally first go to the WLC's and configure the duplex/speed
settings.
Cause I would probably lose WLC remote connection after I configure that
through the same switchport
in question. So after WLC change I would go to the switch and do the
configuration above. Or do it from
the WLC console would be even better to see the real status and when things
start to work again.

---------------------------------

1.2 VLANs, spannig-tree and VTP

page 24 last question about vtp pruning:

#If a device is not on a VLAN on another switch, ensure that traffic is not
sent on that VLAN. Do not use "switchport trunk allowed" for this:

Proposed solution same page:
!
vtp domain ipexpert
vtp pruning
vtp mode transparent
!
#I understand what pruning does and that is what the question is asking about.
However in transparent mode you cannot configure vtp pruning. So I guess thats
#why vtp pruning is entered in vtp server mode cause that is the default vtp
mode.
!
!
#But if you change it to "vtp mode server" you can enter this configuration of
"vtp pruning" But if the proctor is looking for this command, it
#does not appear in the configuration. So only way to see if pruning is turned
on or off is by "show vtp status" then the list should show pruning
#to be enabled or disabled. There is nothing wrong with the DSG as the solution
works.

#However I made one personal discovery as my switch was already in vtp
transparent mode.
#by default a switch is in vtp server mode, but you never know how they
prepared your network in the real lab! (like that is also mentioned in the DSG)

#If you enable pruning in server mode. And then change to transparent mode and
issue the command show vtp status you
#see that pruning becomes enabled. So this would be the trick to alter the
pruning behavior in transparent mode.

This is what happens if you try to do vtp pruning in transparent mode:

!
vtp mode transparent
CCIE-sw-A-6509(config)#vtp pruning
Cannot modify pruning unless in VTP server mode
!
CCIE-sw-A-6509(config)#do show run | i vtp
CCIE-sw-A-6509(config)#do show vtp status
VTP Version : 2

# Now lets try the trick of setting the switch temporary to server mode:
CCIE-sw-A-6509(config)#vtp mode server
Setting device to VTP SERVER mode
CCIE-sw-A-6509(config)#vtp pruning
Pruning switched on
CCIE-sw-A-6509(config)#do show run | i vtp
CCIE-sw-A-6509(config)#
CCIE-sw-A-6509(config)#vtp mode transparent
Setting device to VTP TRANSPARENT mode.
CCIE-sw-A-6509(config)#do show vtp status
