Yes, I doubt very highly that you'll achieve success with the method you've described. You will be unable to perform a rommon or IOS based file copy on the WLC flash. This is why the example article recommends you remove the flash and attach it to a full Linux box and perform a block-level copy of the flash using the dd command.
