I use a mixture on the autonomous APs. But CLI is definitely more important on the Autonomous APs than it is on the WLCs. Here is the absolute minimum that I think you should be able to do in the CLI on the APs.
- Configure interfaces, VLANs, and bridge groups - Configure SSIDs - Configure radio station roles - Configure basic management access All of these could be needed just to even get access to the GUI. Once you get that working, it's up to you. For instance, I really like using the GUI for adding RADIUS/TACACS servers, configuring WDS, and enabling QoS features. As you practice, you'll find what you prefer. I terms of speed, getting really good at the CLI could save you a handful of minutes to get the same amount of points. But just knowing how to configure all of the features and being able to troubleshoot well will save many 10s of minutes as well as increase the number of points that you earn. So your primary focus should be getting good at configuring the APs (doesn't matter which method) and being able to troubleshoot issues.
