I don't see a problem with going directly to 1.6 if it reduces the overhead for you. I might be wrong but aren't the differences not very big anyway?
I hope i can help you out a bit with doing a release, but as i'm still busy at work and with my master i think it will still need some months until i can really work on the project again. For the release i think i can at least do some testing. Helping to merge patches from JIRA should also be possible, depending on my workload...
