I have done this with multiple versions of 1.6 (separate servers for dev/test/prod branches). Basically do not use the installer, use the Zip file and extract a copy of the versions you want to support to different locations. Edit the config files in each version (change the remoting port).. Since the website handles a farm, only one instance of the web is required. It can be configured to talk to both "servers".
