Hi Philippe,
Now when did you ever hear of a Scot giving something away for free? :-)
We do apply educational discounts, but accept that the display workstation
(this is a desk sized unit complete with a second 20" UXGA flat panel in
addition to your 3D screen) is a high end product that will only appeal to
those with a need for very detailed stereoscopic interpretation over
extended periods - hence the advantage of zero stereo cross-talk and lack of
glasses - the IRIS is the ONLY commercially available zero-cross talk 3D
display and really does allow you to work all day in stereo mode without any
of the deleterious physiological side effects associated with the cheaper
solutions you mention! Then again, if you only use stereo for brief periods
at a time you are probably better off using lower-cost options using glasses
or othe autostereoscopic solutions from the likes of Sharp, SeeReal, DTi
etc.
I forgot to mention that the display also has a optional extra - the IRIS
PPS (Passive Projection System) which enables you to drive a projection room
facility from the IRIS if you need to have multi-user review - basically a
dual projector assembly that plugs into the rear of the IRIS
workstation.........and no, before you ask Philippe, this isn't going free
either :-) sorry.
We are co-hosting a user week in central London on the week of February
20th. Its an open event, and free (yes FREE) if you want to pop along and
use the system in anger. This hasn't even been announced on our website yet,
so you heard it hear first folks!
STEREOSCOPIC TECHNOLOGY SHOWCASE, London, 20-24th February 2006.
In partnership with Inition, the UK's leading independent visualisation
specialist, IRIS-3D are participating in a week-long "open-house" event to
enable end users to try some of the latest 3D visualisation hardware on the
market. The IRIS glasses-free 3D display will be demonstrated using 3D
software from a range of industries and applications. The IRIS will also be
used to demonstrate haptics as an intuitive means of interaction with your
3D data set and, for the first time, the IRIS PPS (Passive Projection
System) add-on will be shown - enabling you to transform your IRIS
workstation into a multi-user collaboration workroom tool.
We anticipate a busy week, and so if you are travelling from outwith London,
please do let us know in advance and we will endeavour to book you a session
on the IRIS at a time convenient to you. Map and directions can be found on
the Inition website:
http://www.inition.co.uk/inition/open_week_stereoscopic.htm
Looking forward to seeing you there!

Stuart

Hi Stuart,
Well, 20,000 £ (ex VAT) for a 20" UXGA is probably not something a lab
can afford as easily as a CRT + graphic board... unless you would like
to ship some free for advertisement (-;
Best regards,
Philippe

Anastassis,
Interesting to read about the demise of the CRT and your problems with
flickering screens.
You (and the other BB members) may be interested to learn of an
alternative technology from IRIS-3D in the UK. Historically targeted at
the Oil and Gas Sector for subsurface imaging, it is now being evaluated
in the Life Sciences. This product does not suffer from the flickering
issues mentioned in this thread, being based around dual projection LCD
technology and not requiring special glasses to view:
The IRIS solution is a glasses-free 3D display system that enables you to
work at up to UXGA resolution in stereo mode, is 2D/3D compatible, can be
used in a normal office environment, does not suffer from stereo
cross-talk (this means no more ghosting, eye-strain or headaches -
enabling you to concentrate on your data rather than be distracted by the
display technology) and is compatible with all stereo enabled software on
a wide range of SW/HW platforms.
More information is available from the company website or by contacting me
directly.
Regards,
Stuart

Hi all -
While on the subject and after thanking Warren for providing the
excellent resource ...:
We have some nice 3D monitors and Nvidia cards in Linux PC's we do stereo
with.
Warren correctly points out that you need:
1280x960 @ 120 Hz requires H-sync of 123 kHz 1344x1008 @ 120 Hz requires
H-sync of 130 kHz 1400x1050 @ 120 Hz requires H-sync of 136 kHz
(In fact you need your monitor to switch to these refresh rates only when
in stereo, but thats a detail)
However, I am totally unable to convince the NVidia drivers we have for
Linux to
operate at the sync rates I want them to and Warren advices! Thus, we
have noticeable flicker at stereo
mode (in the non-stereo windows only) which is a shame, given our
excellent monitors.
Is that expected or can be corrected ?
Could anyone please advice me how to set the Nvidia Linux drivers to
operate at the proper sync rates then ?
Tassos
PS - Iiyama Vision Master Pro 514 / HM204DT (H-sync: 142 kHz) is still
available by some European vendors new and is great, we have two, plus an
old trusty EIZO T966 which is also cool. (Warren, I could not find that
on your list, its a good machine, does 136 and you might be able to find
one still)

Folks,
Whether you favor Macintosh, Linux, or Windows for stereo 3D
visualization, you're going to need some specific (and increasingly
rare) hardware.
To help you find it, we've just updated our information page on
stereo-3D-capable displays, cards, emitters, and glasses:
http://pymol.sf.net/stereo3d.html
Remarkably, we can now only find one company selling a brand new CRT
monitor suitable for stereo 3D. If you find any others, please do let
us know!
Cheers,
Warren
