I've done this in the past with CCP4 and KNOPPIX,
following similar steps to those that Bill reports.

I think its useful for training and demos, since
you know what you have, and are not at the mercy
of the host machine. But its not a substitute for
the real thing. Its slower, and you have to burn a 
new CD everytime something is updated. I believe
that KNOPPIX works with DVDs now, but for CDs at 
least, the space limitation is a pain.

I'm also duty-bound to mention the CCP4 licence,
which restricts re-distribution of parts of CCP4,
so be careful who you give those CDs to ;-)
