Yes, single_module will work.

There is a fair bit of discussion on the libtool lists about whether os x binaries for 10.4 onwards should be built as -single_module, as yet the stable branch (as against the development branch) does not support this. There are also concerns about this breaking older versions of the linker. Finally, for 6.0.1 I have chosen to go with static only builds of libjwc_f , since I do not like the idea of fortran common blocks and dynamic libraries (xlf warns against doing this).

I am in awe, but I hardly helped (unless muddying the waters somehow helped...)

Dear Bill,

I finally found the cause of the problem. The -single_module flag must be supplied to g77 during the linking step, not during the compilation of the modules.

To do this, edit the $CCP4/x-windows/libjwc/libjwc_f/libtool script and add -single_module after every occurrence of -dynamiclib.
Then it works.

The -dynamiclib occurs at 6 places in libtool, some of them have the -single_module switch already, but not all.

Thank you for your help!

With best regards,
Markus

The dynamic library for this won't compile on OS X. You can change the configure file to make only the static library, or you can go back and compile it by hand statically, and then the rest will work. Until you try to link xloggraph :-)

Dear all,
I am trying to compile CCP4-6.0. I managed to compile everything except
x-windows/libjwc/libjwc_f (and the dependend programs)
System: Mac OS X 10.4.5 (Dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5)
Compilers:
g77 v. 3.4.3
gcc v. 4.0.1 or v. 3.3
g++ v. 4.0.1 or v. 3.3
During the linking step of libjwc_f I get that strange error message ld: common symbols not allowed with MH_DYLIB output format with the -multi_module option
