Interesting - they may have changed the defaults from the PPC machines.  The defaults on my PowerBook G4 are:

cputime         unlimited
filesize        unlimited
datasize        6144 kbytes
stacksize       8192 kbytes
coredumpsize    0 kbytes
memoryuse       unlimited
descriptors     256
memorylocked    unlimited
maxproc         100

This shows the 8Mb stacksize like Graeme posted in his message.  This is why I put the unlimit command in our shell setup.  Limiting the coredumpsize has to be done again as unlimit will change it from the default to unlimited.

Looks like the Intel machines will be full of new twists!

If I type

on my MacIntel machine I get

cputime         unlimited
filesize        unlimited
datasize        unlimited
stacksize       65508 kbytes
coredumpsize    0 kbytes
memoryuse       unlimited
descriptors     10240
memorylocked    unlimited
maxproc         100

so defaults seem to be the same.

We don't have Intel Macs yet, but putting the following lines in our OS X shell setup has kept us out of such trouble (we work on virus capsids among other things):

unlimit
limit coredumpsize 0

Running limit command shows this:

cputime         unlimited
filesize        unlimited
datasize        unlimited
stacksize       65536 kbytes
coredumpsize    0 kbytes
memoryuse       unlimited
descriptors     10240
memorylocked    unlimited
maxproc         100

Perhaps the Intel machines have different defaults?

Hi Folks,

Sorry - not *quite* a ccp4 question...

I have configured and built (I think) CCP4 6.0 on an intel mac, but I am finding that the run-all script programs fail due to what looks to be memory problems. I have found that ulimit -d unlimited works but ulimit -s unlimited doesn't - there is a hard limit of 8 MB apparently.

Does anyone know how I can fix this? I have googled around a lot…

Thanks,

Graeme
