Thanks to all having answered my question.
This morning I tried to remember what kind of changes have befallen my computer
since October.
And: Bingo! Santa Claus brought a new external harddrive!
The working directory was moved to this harddrive with a link to the original
place in the folder tree.
Moving the directory back to the internal HD makes mtz2various happy.
The remaining question is: Why is mtz2various affected and not other cpp4 programs as for instance
FFT, MAPMASK, CAD or SFALL?

It looks as though the script tries to open a file logs/orig.main
Is the directory logs present relative to the working directory the script
is started from? The GUI may use different paths and files, therefore work
without failure.
