After the shock that 50% of CCP4 downloads are for Windoze, we have checked the statistics for SHELX downloads, which averaged over the last few months about 10 per day for the .tgz files each containing all the binaries for a particular OS and about 2 per day for the .tgz file of all the sources. Ignoring the sources, which would be needed for other OSes but may include e.g. Linux users who compile just for the fun of it, the statistics are:

Linux 47%, Windowe 32% and MacOSX(G4/G5) 21%.

I had expected a higher percentage of Windows for SHELX than for CCP4 because I thought that Windows tends to be more common for small molecule work, but maybe this is not the case. I also suspect that some of the Windows downloads of both CCP4 and SHELX are accounted for by people who use a real operating system for serious computing but like to have the programs on laptops that they use for powerpoint presentations just in case they need to calculate something 'on the fly'.
