POSTDOCTORAL POSITION
"Molecular structural biology for nano-material development"
This interdisciplinary project aims at the design and production of
protein building blocks for the development of nano-objects.
The candidate will be in charge of the molecular design, genetic
manipulation, expression and purification of protein chimeras, which
either bear functional groups or assemble spontaneously into
nano-arrays. Tasks will also include the biophysical analysis of samples
and X-ray crystallographic studies directed to validate the design
principles. The successful applicant will work in the group of Olga
Mayans at the Division of Structural Biology, Biozentrum (University of
Basel), and the visualization and manipulation of nano-objects will be
performed under the supervision of Laurent Kreplak in collaboration with
the Swiss Nanoscience Center.
The Division of Structural Biology at Biozentrum is fully equipped for
the structural analysis of proteins and large assemblies using NMR,
electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and X-ray crystallography.
A full range of protein expression systems are in operation for sample
production and multiple biophysical techniques are available for sample
characterization.
Requirements: a strong background in molecular biology, protein
engineering and/or ab initio protein design is required as well as
strong experience in protein production and purification. Initial
familiarity with a structural or biophysical technique will be of
distinct advantage, although full training in X-ray crystallography and
microscopy techniques will be provided.
Applications should be in the form of a comprehensive CV, a one-page
summary of past work and contact details for two referees.
Starting date: 1st July 2006
