I think that the crystallisation trials robot would have a greater effect in the short term, since you will be able to set up more trials, for less protein, screen more space and improve your chances of getting a hit. However, with all high throughput technology its a process of moving the bottleneck. In the longer term and as the capacity of the unit expands, I think the need for an imaging system would almost inevitably follow, since it is likely you will move the bottleneck to inspecting trays - if, for example, you set up 1000 drops per protein and really looked at each drop reasonably carefully (say 5 seconds), then thats over 80 minutes for looking at each protein. So I would go for a crystal robot, and immediately start planning for the imager.
