A postdoc position is available immediately in the van Aalten group at the School of Life Sciences in sunny Dundee, beautiful Scotland. Building on recently published work (see Rao et al., EMBO J. (2006), 25, 1569-1578), you will be working on the functional mechanisms and structure of human O-GlcNAcase, a signal-transduction enzyme that regulates levels of a key post-translational protein modification, and is linked to cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer's disease. You will be working in a highly international (currently 11 different nationalities) research group that operates across the disciplines of structural biology, cell biology, enzymology, drug design and synthetic chemistry to study the function and mechanisms of protein-carbohydrate interactions. More information on the group can be found on http://www.dundee.ac.uk/biocentre/SLSBDIV1dava.htm and http://davapc1.bioch.dundee.ac.uk. This position is particularly suited for someone with a (cell) biological background who is interested in learning more molecular techniques. Training, as required, will be provided in a well-equipped and supportive environment enabling the successful candidate to extend skills and expertise. The building has excellent facilities for all aspects of research, including in-house and easily accessible services for cloning, proteomics, DNA sequencing, oligo synthesis and growth media. Tayside has an affordable cost of living compared to places in the South of the UK and of course countryside of outstanding beauty, including large sandy beaches and challenging hills. Rainfall charts show this is one of the most sunny & dry places in the UK, see http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/uk/averages/19712000/mapped.html The position is available immediately and is for 3 years. Applicants for the postdoc positions should mail a specific (i.e. applications generated through automated procedures available on many job web sites will be ignored) cover letter (quoting post DVA/2006/1) with a detailed curriculum vitae and a brief description of research achievements/experience, and provide the names and contact details of three referees to Ms Janette Cordiner, School of Life Sciences, MSI/WTB Complex, Dow St, University of Dundee, Dundee, DD1 5EH, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Informal inquiries (but NOT applications) can be made to myself at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Closing date: 31 July 2006 ############################################################################## Prof. Daan van Aalten Wellcome Trust Senior Fellow Wellcome Trust Biocentre, Dow Street TEL: ++ 44 1382 384979 Div. of Biol.Chem. & Mol.Microbiology FAX: ++ 44 1382 385764 School of Life Sciences E-mail: see WWW page Univ. of Dundee, Dundee DD1 5EH, UK WWW: http://davapc1.bioch.dundee.ac.uk
