BIOPHYSICIST
Requisition # 019113

As a member of the Integrated Center for Structure and Function Innovation (ISFI), a PSI-2 specialized technology center, the Biophysicist will work with the principal investigator (PI) and other scientists to determine the three-dimensional structures of important proteins by x-ray crystallography.  The successful candidate will coordinate and conduct robot protein crystallization experiments in the ISFI crystallization facility at LBNL. He/she will participate in data collection and structure determination for important biological macromolecules, to continue the development of an established robotic crystallization infrastructure, and to collaborate with colleagues both internal and external to the ISFI.

He/she must prepare scientific data for publication in scientific journals and present findings at seminars and conferences, and will assist PI with training and managing the work flow of other technical staff.  The candidate will be required to assist with the development of funding proposals, maintain an accurate and detailed scientific logbook of all experiments performed, and ensure that others could duplicate results. The preferred candidate will be able to initiate independent projects in the framework of structural biology or structural genomics, and will participate in group meetings and seminars. Qualifications:  Significant experience in protein crystallization is required, in addition to expertise in x-ray diffraction data collection and structure determination.  The candidate must have the ambition and desire to automate procedures for routine tasks, and must possess demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and organize results for publication and presentation documented by publication record in physics, biology, bioengineering, biophysics, biochemistry, or instrumentation fields.  Excellent written communication, organizational, and analytical skills are required. Experience in the use of computer programs is required for biological crystallography, as is the ability to work in a team environment. A Ph.D. in Biophysics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a related area is preferred, in addition to a minimum of 2 or more years of successful postdoctoral experience.  The desired candidate will have good working knowledge of molecular biology techniques, especially those involved in  cloning and protein overexpression.

Note:  This is a full-time, one-year term appointment with possible renewal contingent upon continued funding and satisfactory performance.
