Several positions are available in the Laboratory for Biocrystallography, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Catholic University of Leuven (http://pharm.kuleuven.be/anafar).

1. A PhD student post starting October 2006. The successful candidate will join a research project focussed on the three-dimensional structure of intermediate filaments. For background information see Strelkov et al (2001) J Mol Biol 306, 771-779; Strelkov et al (2002) EMBO J 21, 1255-1266; Strelkov et al (2003) Bioessays 25, 243-251; Herrmann & Aebi (2004) Annu Rev Biochem 73, 749-789; Strelkov et al (2004) J Mol Biol 343, 1067-1080. The Group is hosted in a brand-new building and disposes of own X-ray diffractometer (Rigaku/Mar), crystallisation facilities
and wet labs as well as a computing cluster.

The activities of the successful candidate will include crystallographic and small-angle X-ray scattering studies as well as computer modelling of intermediate filament proteins. The applicant should have a BSc or MSc diploma in biophysics, bioinformatics or a related field and at least some experience in research. Strong interest in computational methods would be a plus.

The post is competitively funded by the University of Leuven for a period of up to five years. The PhD student will participate in the teaching of undergraduate students (for this purpose, some command of Dutch will be eventually expected but an initial grace period may be granted). Important: due to the funding source, only E.U. nationals are eligible to apply!

2. In addition, we are looking for a postdoc to join our group and become a key player in the abovementioned project. While no immedate funding is available, recent PhDs with a strong publication record in protein crystallography or bioinformatics are invited to discuss the
perspectives of joint funding applications.

3. A fully funded permanent laboratory technician/manager post is also available. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the technical support of experimental activities as well as computer maintenance work.

The search for suitable candidates is open immediately and will continue until the positions are filled. Please send your application, together with a detailed CV, publication list, and a list of referees, to
Prof. Sergei Strelkov, e-mail: sergei.strelkov(at)pharm.kuleuven.be.

Leuven is a mid-size university town located only 25 km east of Brussels. Rich history, remarkable architecture and green surroundings make Leuven one of the best locations in Belgium. Leuven will host the European Crystallographic Meeting this August; interested candidates attending the meeting
are invited to enquire with us in person.
