Dear List,
One post-doctoral fellowship will become available at the IBS Grenoble in 2007.
The funding body has selected three themes of research and invites applications
for candidates. Only one candidate (and thus one theme of research) will be
selected by the funding body on a competitive basis. One of the criteria for
selection is academic and research excellence at all levels, from high school
all the way to thesis work (and beyond if the candidate already holds
a post-doctoral fellowship). European citizenship or valid work permit allowing
employment in France is compulsory.
One of the research themes selected by the funding body concerns the study,
by crystallographic and associated biophysical methods, of trypanosomal
proteases.
The final aim of this research is the delivery of novel compounds aimed at
treating
or preventing mammalian or plant trypanosomiases (or both).
The Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics at IBS is working on the structure
analysis
of target enzymes from the unicellular parasites of the Trypanosoma genera, see
for example Cosenza et al. (2002), The 3.0 A resolution crystal structure
of glycosomal pyruvate phosphate dikinase from Trypanosoma brucei,
J. Mol. Biol. 318, 1417-1432.
Crystals of a target trypanosomal protease are already at hand, with native
diffraction data extending to 2.8 A resolution. Lack of a suitable molecular
replacement model indicates the need for 'ab initio' phasing by Se-Met MAD.
Hence
the candidate will be ready to participate in Se-Met labelled protein
production, crystallisation (using robotics), MAD data collection on the ESRF
beam lines, structure determination, refinement and analysis.
The fellowship will be available for 12 months, with the possibility of an
extension for an additional 12 months.
Grenoble is the vibrant capital of the French Alps, with skiing resorts nearby.
It is also the home of world class research facilities, including the ILL
(dedicated neutron source), the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, and
the Institut de Biologie Structurale.
Inquiries should be directed to me, [EMAIL PROTECTED] or [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Please pass along to suitable candidates or display on your departmental
announcement board. Thank you.
