Postdoctoral Position at the Institut de biologie structurale, Grenoble (France) for a biochemist or a bio-crystallographer

A postdoctoral position will be open at the “Institut de biologie structurale” (IBS) at Grenoble (France) next winter for two years. This fellowship is attributed preferentially to a young scientist who has completed his/her PhD in a laboratory not related to the Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique (CEA) in the past two years. This position is available for a biochemist or a bio-crystallographer. A candidate with an expertise in DNA binding protein would be appreciated but is not compulsory.

At the IBS, we have just joined a project on the molecular mechanisms responsible for the radiation and dessication tolerance of the Deinococcus deserti, bacteria isolated which are extremely resistant to gamma radiations and drought. These bacteria possess very efficient DNA repair systems to survive in such exceptional life conditions. The origins of this remarkable resistance and the mechanisms of genome repair of these organisms are still not elucidated (Cox & Battista, 2005). However, some proteins have already been identified in Deinococcus radiodurans and are also present in D. deserti. we have initiated preliminary expression tests of these proteins and selected some conditions suitable for their biochemical and structural study. Our goal is to determine the crystal structures of these first candidates and to understand and define the mechanisms of radiation resistance related to these proteins at the molecular level. In the next future, other potential proteins will be studied in our lab and in collaboration with the CEA at Cadarache.

The candidate will be involved in the purification, the DNA binding assay and the crystallographic work. The IBS has a great location for whom desires to work in structural biology, with an international environment (ESRF, ILL, EMBL and the newly Carl-Ivan Branden Building), an easy access to the available platforms (crystallization and protein expression) and to the synchrotron beamlines. Grenoble is a medium size city with an easy way of life and a large panel of outdoor activities and an intellectual life.

Candidates should send CV directly to Laurence Serre at the IBS before the 1st of October 2006.
