Software Engineer for the Management of the AutomateD CollectioN DatA (DNA) Project (m/f), a fixed-term contract until 31 December 2007 Deadline: 30 October 2006 http://www.esrf.fr/Jobs/Posts/CDD_DNA_A/ The Function DNA is a collaborative software project. Its primary aim is to exploit the advances in synchrotron beamline hardware to facilitate the automated collection and processing of diffraction data from macromolecular crystals, see www.dna.ac.uk for an overview. A high level of automation is a crucial component of synchrotron beamlines. It helps both to maximise the efficiency of experiments time and allows less experienced users to collect better data from the samples. The current version of the software allows crystal characterisation, suggests a data collection strategy and initiates the collection of the diffraction images using the native beamline control software. In the future, the software will be extended to incorporate data collection on poorer quality crystals, improved strategy, radiation damage estimates, more sophisticated sample ranking, kappa goniometry, and links to downstream analysis. As the DNA Project Manager, you will oversee the development of the newest versions of this code. Qualifications & Experience You should hold a University degree in Computing Sciences (Diplom, DESS, Laurea, Licenciatura, MSc ...) or equivalent. Candidates with a combined experience in biology and computing programming are particularly welcome to apply. An experience in programming languages such as JAVA and/or Python is a strong asset. You should have experience in working in large co-operative scientific software projects, and should have demonstrated management and organizational skills. Since the project developers are widely dispersed across Europe willingness to travel regularly to host institutes is important. This position is funded through BIOXHIT (http://www.bioxhit.org). Our Offer The ESRF shares a site with several other major European scientific institutes, it offers an exciting opportunity in an international atmosphere. Employment Conditions Notes The working language of the ESRF is English.
