Dear colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that a limited number of bursaries will be
available for the academic year 2006-7 for Birkbeck College's acclaimed
Internet-based courses in structural biology. Bursaries of 1000 pounds /
year for one or two years will be available to students who are otherwise
well qualified but unable to take the courses for financial reasons only.
They are mainly aimed at, but not necessarily restricted to, students from
emerging economic regions. Applications wiill be judged on both academic
merit and economic need.

Three one-year courses and one M.Sc. are available:

* Principles of Protein Structure: An introduction to the structure and
function of proteins suitable for graduates in relevant sciences
  http://www.cryst.bbk.ac.uk/pps.html

* Techniques in Structural Molecular Biology: An introduction to the main
structural biology techniques (crystallography, NMR and electron
microscopy), plus relevant molecular biology and bioinformatics
  http://tsmb.cryst.bbk.ac.uk/

* Protein Crystallography: A course that focuses on the underlying
principles of protein crystallography (from diffraction to structure
validation) aimed at students from a biological background
  http://px.cryst.bbk.ac.uk/

* M.Sc. Structural Molecular Biology: Students who pass Principles of
Protein Structure and then one of the other two courses become eligible
  for the M.Sc.

These bursaries have been established to celebrate the 10th anniversary of
the Principles of Protein Structure course and part-funded in memory of Dr
Alan Mills (1945-2003) who developed the first version of that course with
Professor Peter Murray-Rust.

Candidates for bursaries must first follow the application instructions
given on the course websites (above). This will involve completing the
Birkbeck postgraduate application form either online or on paper. They
should then contact the course administrator, Maureen Austin
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> with a CV, covering letter explaining why
they are applying, and details of two academic or professional referees.

The deadline for applications is Monday, 9 October 2006.

Further information can be obtained from <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.

Please circulate this announcement widely. Thank you!

Best regards,

Dr. Clare Sansom
