Hi Tim,

Yes we do, e.g. we sometimes get development versions for CCP4 but don't
want to force everyone to use a beta version. 

So this is really a problem for centralised computing, which is made
worse when you have different 'kinds' of users! We see this as a
potential solution to more general problems not just multiple versions
of 'CCP4' e.g.

- people want a choice of compilers, versions thereof and applications
compiled in different ways
- just between a group of <>8 of us we came up with a list about 4 sides
of A4 of MX software we would like available which could make a very
long path (which slows systems down) - its not always possible to put
everything in the same bin
- we might also extend the same system across the whole site and
scientific disciplines
It goes on.

There are many ways this could be done (hacked .login, scripts etc) but
module is already in use on a number of sites which have compute
clusters.
