in fact when I tried installation using fink in x11 it didn't work, (so there
was no cootin/sw/bin) then yesterday I tried the fink installation from the
terminal window and it worked no problem.
it is not too clear to me what is the difference between terminal and x11....
but anyway it worked
thanks

Are you using bash? It is a peculiarity of bash that it will run either
.bashrc or .bash_profile but not both. In Apple's rootless X11
environment, this can lead to unpredicted behavior. The behavior of bash
in this regard is much better suited to (eg) a standard linux X-windowed
unix operating system, and given that bash is the only shell on OS X
that does this, it really makes me wonder why they switched the default
user shell from tcsh (the decision was probably made by a marketing
department). You might be more comfortable with either tcsh or zsh. If
you want to stick with bash, put everything in .bashrc and then source it
from .bash_profile

PS: I've moved coot into fink stable
