Alba is a third generation 3 GeV storage ring being built near Barcelona. The project, which is managed by the CELLS consortium (constituted by Spanish and Catalan agencies) is developing and staffing at a fast pace. Seven beamlines have been already funded and foreseen to be operational for users from 2010.
A beamline scientist position is now available in the Macromolecular Crystallography beamline (XALOC). This beamline will use an in-vacuum undulator as a source, and a monochromator and focusing mirrors to condition the beam in an energy range of 5-15 keV and a variable spot size at sample (20-200 um). For further information on the beamline refer to www.cells.es/Divisions/Experiments/beamlines/BeamlineOptics.pdf RESPONSABILITIES The scientist will work with the beamline team in: * Designing and commissioning of the sample environment station, including the instrumentation for automated operation of the beamline * Giving support to external users once the beamline will be operative * Participating in projects to continuously improve and upgrade the beamline * Defining and supervising of a sample preparation laboratory to be built in the vicinity of the beamline * Carrying on an independent scientific programme at the beamline which might imply to supervise PhD students or postdocs QUALIFICATIONS The successful candidate should have a PhD degree in Structural Biology, Molecular Biology, biochemistry or related disciplines, and sound experience in instrumentatiion used in macromolecular crystallography and data analysis software. Knowledge in crystallization techniques is an asset. Also, the candidate has to have adaptability to an international and multidisciplinary environment, sense of responsability and ability to work independently as well as a member of a team. Working language, although local languages are desirable. The site is based in the vicinity of Barcelona.
