Dear All,

A postdoctoral position is available in Stan Burgess' lab within the Astbury Centre in Leeds for a 4-year study on the motor protein dynein by cryo-electron microscopy.

Please bring this advert to the attention of any structural biologist, biochemist, computational image processor, electron microscopist or X-ray crystallographer in your lab wishing to branch out into this exciting field.

A full description of the post is given below.

Many thanks,

Stan Burgess

Post Doctoral Research Associate
University Grade 6 (starting salary Grade 6: £20,842 - £24,161 p.a.)
or Grade 7 (starting salary £26,402) depending on experience.

We are seeking a structural biologist, computational image processor, electron microscopist or biochemist for structural studies of recombinant dynein motor proteins using cryo-electron microscopy and single particle computational image processing. This BBSRC-funded post is available immediately for a fixed term of up to four years in Dr Stan Burgess’ lab. Experience of cryo-electron microscopy and three-dimensional image processing of single particles is highly desirable but not essential for those candidates with appropriate computational or structural biology backgrounds. Recombinant dynein proteins will be supplied by our collaborator Prof. Kazuo Sutoh (University of Tokyo). Cryo-microscopy will be performed using a Technai F20 microscope fitted with a 4k CCD camera an energy filter and Leginon. Some negative stain work will also be used for initial characterization of new constructs. Image processing will be performed using SPIDER, Imagic and EMAN on a 150-processor Linux cluster and numerous graphics workstations.

The successful candidate will join a rapidly expanding and dynamic research environment in molecular motors, electron microscopy and structural biology within the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology (http://www.fbs.leeds.ac.uk/institutes/imcb/imcb.htm) and the Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology (http://www.astbury.leeds.ac.uk/) at Leeds.
