Novartis Institutes of Biomedical Research in Basel, Switzerland are 
looking for a motivated individual to fill the role of a Research 
Investigator in protein crystallography. 

The protein crystallographer will work in a biomolecular structure group 
dedicated to the production of structural data to support drug discovery 
programs in a wide variety of therapeutic indications. The job consists of 
the planning of gene-to-structure projects, the running of the 
crystallisation, data collection and structure determination efforts, and 
the presentation of the results obtained. Additional activities may 
include protein purification and studies of protein-ligand interactions 
using other biophysical methods (eg. ITC, DSC). The candidate will be 
expected to have an interest in fragment-based screening, exploring new 
ideas and implementing novel technologies. Good leadership and 
communication skills are essential as each research investigator has a 
role in coordinating the activities of a team to bring a drug target from 
given sequence to three-dimensional structure and to ensure the maximum 
impact of the structural work in the multidisciplinary drug discovery 
teams.

The protein structure unit consists of experts in all areas from cloning 
to structural studies by X-ray and NMR.  Specialist support in these areas 
is available as are state of the art equipment (well equipped purification 
labs, crystallisation and imaging robotics, Fr-E generator with sample 
changer and CCD and image plate detectors, and linux workstations with a 
large range of software) and excellent access to a synchrotron radiation 
source. Dedicated support for software and hardware is also available.

Requirements: 
Education and training : PhD in structural biology, biochemistry, 
chemistry or related science
Specific expertise : Protein X-ray crystallography, protein preparation, 
other biophysical techniques would be an advantage
Necessary job experience : >1 years of postdoc studies, several years 
industrial experience including fragment-based screening would be an 
advantage
General : Scientific and entrepreneurial initiative, team player, 
communication skills
Languages : English a must, German desirable
