Research Technician (Fixed-term)

Protein expression for Structural Biology

Applications are invited for the above post from highly motivated individuals
with a strong interest in eukaryotic protein expression, protein biochemistry
and protein purification. The research project is funded by the British Heart
Foundation as part of a programme grant to study blood coagulation factors. A
thorough understanding of these factors will lead to the design of inhibitors
targeted at thrombosis related disease. The successful candidate will use
insect cell expression systems to express soluble proteins and purify these for
crystallisation and fluorescence (FRET) experiments.

The person appointed will benefit from both state-of-the-art facilities in the
crystallography laboratory and the collaborative environment of the Centre for
Biomolecular Sciences located on the University Park campus. Facilities
include AKTA protein purification equipment, a 10L Fermentor, nanolitre
dispensing crystallisation robotics, and a modern high flux X-ray data
collection. This post is based within the Division of Medicinal Chemistry and
Structural Biology in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Nottingham.

Candidates should ideally have a degree or equivalent qualification from the
biological sciences. Experience with tissue culture, protein purification and
preferably insect cell expression systems and/or baculovirus is desirable.

Salary will be within the range £19,264 - £23,002 per annum, depending on
qualifications and experience (salary can progress to £27,466 per annum,
subject to performance). This post is available from 1st October 2007 and will
be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of five years.
