Thank you to the many people who replied.
Several pointed out, that Stereo mode for the Quadro NVS280 is not
supported.
Kay Diederichs sent me the link

which lists the NVIDIA cards suitable for Stereo, namely those with the
keyword 'Stereo' in the line "Display Connectors".
According to several replies, the FX1400 used to be the cheapest card
suitable for stereo but is not longer sold by NVIDIA. David Roberts
suggests to buy them on ebay. He also mentioned that the easiest way to
check stereo capability was to check for the 9-pin connector for the plug
of the 60GX to the stereo controller.
Our solution was to remember that we have a machine with an FX3500 card
where stereo worked out of the box with the
Option "Stereo" "3"
present in /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Although we have ATI-cards with the 9-pin connector, we did no try how the
ATI driver/ card performs under stereo.

Accroding to some web page about O, the options are set to
(**) NVIDIA(0): Option "Stereo" "3"

(**) NVIDIA(0): Option "IgnoreEDID" "false"
(**) NVIDIA(0): Option "UseEdidFreqs" "true"
Yet, the log file says
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Stereo is only available on Quadro cards
(II) NVIDIA(0): Disabling stereo.
I was wondering whether anyone could explain what is so un-Quadro about this
card?
(Currently, the display is an LCD, but the same messages came up when the
display was a CRT)
