Proteopedia - because life is not 2D
Proteopedia is a new interactive web resource that presents 3D Biomolecular structures in an intuitive way by linking descriptive text to 3D images (see e.g., "HIV-1 protease" <http://proteopedia.org/wiki/index.php/HIV-1_protease >). Moreover, Proteopedia, which is based on the 'open source' tools of MediaWiki and Jmol, allows for real-time community annotation, via 'user friendly' authoring tools, and aims to foster an open atmosphere of information sharing and informal scientific discussion. A web browser (with JAVA installed) is all that is needed to access the site and the 3D information; thus, there is no need to download and install a viewer. To add information to Proteopedia, one needs only to register from the homepage at <http://www.proteopedia.org>.

An open-access article describing Proteopedia was recently published: Hodis, Prilusky, Martz, Silman, Moult & Sussman "Proteopedia – a scientific ‘wiki’ bridging the rift between 3D structure and function of biomacromolecules" Genome Biol 2008, 9(8):R121. <http://genomebiology.com/2008/9/8/R121 >

For a demonstration of the Proteopedia software, please visit the ‘Proteopedia Video Guide’ <http://www.proteopedia.org/wiki/index.php/Proteopedia:Video_Guide >, where you will find several narrated videos to guide you through the use of Proteopedia. Proteopedia is holding a “Page of the Year” competition with an Apple iPod Touch (32GB) as the grand prize, donated by iDigital, the Apple representative in Israel.
