Staff Scientist and 2 Research Technician positions in the Laura Bassi “Center for Optimised Structural Studies*“

*The Center for Optimised Structural Studies (COSS)* is a joint, FFG (www.ffg.at <http://www.ffg.at>) funded venture between Max F. Perutz Laboratories at the University of Vienna, Research Institute of Molecular Pathology and Intercell, all located at the Campus Vienna Biocenter (Vienna, Austria). COSS will establish a platform for the generation of recombinant cytoplasmic, membrane proteins and protein complexes for structural and functional studies and for efficient crystallisation screening. We will combine the recent advances in automated expression screening of protein targets *employing nested constructs design* and *cell-free* protein *expression* systems with *mutagenesis screens* followed by *biophysical characterization* to find those conditions best suited for structural and functional studies.

*Job description: *

- *Staff scientist: *The staff scientist will be involved in providing technical support and oversight for all COSS work packages, as well as supervising, managing, and leading the COSS team. **

- *Research Technicians (2): *The research technicians will be engaged in fundamental research within the different COSS work packages, and will provide technical expertise in molecular biology, protein production, purification, crystallization, and data management.**

*Qualifications and experience:*

- *Staff scientist*: An experienced scientist with post-doctoral or staff scientist experience with a PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, structural biology, or biotechnology will be qualified for this position. Technical skills in recombinant protein expression, purification, and crystallization will be necessary. In particular, experience with protein production by /in vitro/ translation and/or high-throughput methods of protein production will be desirable. Strong IT skills or experience with LIMS/PIMS will also be a great advantage. Good communication skills and organizational ability will be required. In addition creativity, flexibility, and experience with leading a team or supervising others will be necessary, as well as a capacity for strategic thinking and strong leadership ability.

- *Research Technicians: *We are looking for scientists with a university or technical school degree in molecular biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or biotechnology. Previous experience working as a technician is desirable but not necessary. Experience with molecular biology techniques and protein production and purification, in particular with /in vitro/ translation systems and/or membrane proteins, will be an advantage. Good communication skills and organizational ability will be required. In addition high motivation, the ability to learn new skills, and good team integration skills are a must.

*Contract:* A 1 year contract will be offered to the successful candidates, with the possibility of an extension of up to 3 years based on performance. Salaries will be offered on the scale recommended by the Austrian Science Fund and commensurate with experience.

*Commencing date:* 1^st January 2010

*Closing date:* 30^th September 2009

*Interviews planned for*: mid-end October 2009
