The protein crystallisation facility at the Institute of Biotechnology will organise a three-day practical course on protein crystallisation techniques. The course is aimed at graduate students and post docs with interest in structural characterisation of proteins. The course will include lectures and practical sessions given by international experts in the field. The course will cover sample preparation, basic crystallisation techniques, optimisation of crystallisation conditions, an introduction to automation systems and membrane protein crystallisation. In addition, it will be possible for students to work on their own samples.

The course will be organised on 4-6 November 2009 and run from 9 am to 6 pm. The course is worth 1.5 ECTS credits. Lectures will be in the morning and practicals in the afternoon.

Applicants are requested to submit a letter of motivation, including information on their background, research interests and a justification for attending the course (max. one A4 page in total). The application should be sent electronically to [email protected] no later than 18 September 2009. Up to 18 students will be selected on the basis of the applications. No prior experience in protein crystallisation or structural biology is required for the course, but students conducting or aiming for structural work will be prioritised.

Students from outside Helsinki are encouraged to apply. Accommodation will be arranged, but the organisers will not cover the costs.
