I made about half of such an effort a few years ago <http://dev.gentoo.org/~dberkholz/ccp4-6.0-autotool.tar.bz2> -- I think it took a week or two of spare time. If there were sufficient interest from CCP4 developers in actually making the switch to a standard, broadly accepted if not universally loved build system (i.e., autotools), I could probably be convinced to finish the job. I stopped at the time because I thought it was rather pointless if it wouldn't be incorporated into the main distribution, and there was basically zero interest from developers. It would be extremely beneficial to those of us who prefer to install the package on their systems in an integrated fashion instead of letting it huddle together with its source code and object files. In addition, I expect it would provide a more consistent and less confusing experience to anyone who's built software by hand in the past. If done carefully, it should also allow for parallel builds.
