Hi Fred & Seb,
It might be slightly different in France, however in the UK a basic
education in science is one of the best career steps someone can take
(up to degree level). Granted staying in academic research is not as
easy as moving into industry, but in the schools work I have done I
have found a general enthusiasm for continuing science education
beyond secondary level. Perhaps the only complaint people do make
about science is related to Kevin's post about pomo a couple days ago
- scientists can sometimes be a bit arrogant by appearing to claim
that science is superior/has all the answers compared to other subjects.

Fred,
it's not my intention to engage in any sort of discussion here about
the
usefulness of science, in particular because I think we can all
agree on
that one.
The point I was trying to make is that if young people in countries
like
France turn away from science, this might not be because they fail
to see
human progress depends on it - recent surveys suggest the opposite -
but
simply because they understand full well that career prospects are
nil.

Hi, thanks for your message. We have only progressed (we=mankind)
through knowledge, science and research. Not forgetting the
humanities
of course. So if we don't do anything to stop this trend we're dead.

We all love science Fred, but are you sure you would want to

Dear all,
Sorry if this is a bit off-topic. But it concerns science.
There is a new initiative to launch a free TV channel in France
dedicated to science technology and innovation. They need support
from
scientists I think. Can you spare 2 minutes? http://www.leonardtv.fr/
.
This is perhaps the only way (a TV channel) to get the younger
generations back into science and research. So I think it's
important
(younger people tend to enrol into MBa programs nowadays, at
least over
here).
Thanks in advance for the support you can give.
All the best,
Fred.
