I would not rely on recipes. When I pick a cryo protectant, I always prepare a
set of solutions and take an image from a large loop dipped into solution.
Then I pick the one with the least concentration that does not show ice rings
anymore.

The behaviour can change with a crystal in the loop, but I hope by using a large
loop and taking a big drop I'm on the safe side.

For 2,3-butanediol I'd probably prepare the mother liquor with 10%, 15%, 20%
2,30butanediol. Having read what Eike just replied I might include the
"2.5%"-steps, too.
