E-mail: jtat...@tpna.com ======================================================================== =============================================== Senior Director, Structural Biology (Takeda San Diego) OBJECTIVES: Directs, develops and integrates the Company's Structural Biology resources to ensure timely achievement of major goals. Oversees and provides direction for the Molecular Biology, Crystallography, and Protein Chemistry sub-groups. Provides deep expertise and strategic leadership in X-ray crystallography, and across structure based drug design programs in oncology, inflammation and metabolic diseases. Invents and advances drug candidate compounds towards preclinical and clinical development. ACCOUNTABILITIES: * Directs the management and research activities of TSD Structural Biology departments to enhance the Company's IND success rates, particularly in the oncology, inflammation, and metabolic diseases therapeutic areas.. * Acts as a thought leader in crystallography and structure-based drug design * Co-leads TSD cross-functional drug discovery programs to achieve compelling target product profiles based on scientific, clinical, regulatory, and commercial rationales * Plays an integral role in TSD drug discovery target selection and portfolio management both as a member of the TSD Research Committee and in inter-site Takeda forums in the US and Japan. * Sets annual site-level and multi-year strategic plans, and engages in international corporate strategic planning to fulfill TSD's mission as a Takeda IND engine. * Directs and controls the activities of one or more functional/technical areas including Molecular Biology, Crystallography, & Protein Chemistry. Responsible for the direct line management of the department team leaders (up to Director level), and for their research and career development * Effectively communications multiple dimensions of Company's science and business strategies and establishes productive relationships with outside groups, including major collaborations. * Collaborates with senior management to manage company operations and set company-wide policies * Budgetary responsibility for functional areas. Summarizes and presents R&D project status, budget, and issues/highlights to senior management and project leaders/teams. Ensures budget requirements are met. * Teaches, advises, and leads direct and indirect reports in an inspirational fashion, to accomplish key group and corporate objectives . * EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: * Ph.D. in crystallography, or a related discipline, and a minimum of 12 years industry experience; OR * MS in chemistry, or related discipline and a minimum of 14 years of industry experience; OR * BS in chemistry, or related discipline and a minimum of 17 years of industry experience * Recognized internationally as an expert in crystallography and structure-based drug design * Track-record of expertise in X-ray crystallography of soluble and membrane-associated proteins and in using crystallographic data to invent potential novel medicines * Inspirational leadership skills with proven experience in successfully managing large projects and maximizing the performance of large groups of scientists * Track-record of expertise in structure based drug discovery, including biochemistry, biology, efficacy and Pharmacodynamic/biomarker models, and toxicology * Extensive knowledge of current drug discovery & development processes worldwide with an emphasis on oncology, inflammation and metabolic disease areas * Clear record of accomplishment (e.g. publications, patents, presentations) including evidence of leadership in delivering one or more internally discovered compounds into clinical development * Exceptional interpersonal, collaborative and team-building skills * Outstanding written and oral communication skills PHYSICAL DEMANDS: * Potential exposure to hazardous/toxic/dangerous chemicals * Manual/physical dexterity required to operate basic office equipment (i.e. computers, printers, phones, photocopiers, etc.), and carrying, handling and reaching for objects. * Prolonged standing and/or sitting. TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS: * Ability to drive or fly to various meetings or client sites, including overnight trips. * International travel required, including some weekends * Requires approximately 15 % travel.
