Research Associate at Imperial College London

We are seeking to recruit a Research Associate to work with Professor Xiaodong
Zhang’s research team in the Division of Molecular Biosciences, Centre for
Structural Biology, at the South Kensington Campus of Imperial College London
(www.imperial.ac.uk/people/xiaodong.zhang<http://www.imperial.ac.uk/people/xiaodong.zhang>).

In collaboration with Dr. Stephen West, Cancer Research UK, we are currently
carrying out structural studies of BRCA2 and interacting partners. The
successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Stephen West’s laboratory at
Cancer Research UK, where the majority of the protein production and
biochemistry will be carried out. This position is funded for 3 years by the
Medical Research Council and it is available from 1 March 2012.

Mutations in two breast cancer susceptibility genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, have been
linked to increased risk of developing cancers, especially breast and ovarian
cancers. BRCA2 is one of the largest proteins in cells and only recently it has
been successfully purified. The successful candidate will be responsible for
carrying out structural studies of BRCA2 and associated complexes, primarily
using electron microscopy techniques.

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent qualifications in a structural biology
or biochemistry discipline. You must also have research experience in a
structural biological laboratory environment covering electron microscopy
single particle analysis or X-ray crystallography and knowledge to at least
undergraduate level in protein biochemistry and structural biology. It is
essential for the post holder to have the capacity for innovative high quality
structural biological research. Knowledge of DNA damage repair is desirable.

The post holder must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, be
able to conduct detailed reviews of literature, develop and apply new concepts
well as rapidly learn new research methods. You must be able to demonstrate
high levels of organisation and problem solving skills, the ability to pay
close attention to detail, and to show initiative and innovation. It is also
essential that you are able to organise your own work with minimal supervision
ensuring you meet deadlines and research objectives. You must have experience
in using advanced computer packages, especially electron microscopy image
processing packages.

You must have discipline and regard for confidentiality and security at all
times and be willing to work as member of a team and be open-minded and
cooperative. A willingness to travel both within the United Kingdom and abroad
to conduct research and attend conferences/workshops and other meetings is also
essential.

Closing Date 9 January 2012 (midnight GMT)
