This is the first announcement of “2014: Crystal (cl-)Year”, a meeting to celebrate the International Year of Crystallography by encouraging young people to macromolecular crystallography and fostering international collaborations. The meeting will be held in Turin (I) on October 16-17 th 2014 jointly with the meeting NETTAB2014, a bioinformatic conference which in 2014 will focus on structural bioinformatics. 2014 Crystal (cl-)Year is an event that will bring together some of the most important crystallographers of the world. Three Nobel Laureates (Professors Brian Kobilka, John Walker and Ada Yonath) will participate to the meeting each of them will be leading a conference session. The first session will be focused on the crystal structure of membrane proteins, the second on Energy and life the third on crystals of Macromolecular complex. Prof. Edward Arnold (Rutgers Univ.) will be the leading scientist of a fourth session dedicated to Macromolecular crystallization for structure-based drug design. Eventually Prof. Paul Steinhardt (Princeton Univ.) will present the first structures of a natural quasicrystal. 2014 Crystal (cl-)Year will be mainly dedicated to young researcher (PhD students and early Post-Docs), some of whom will be selected to give an oral contribution during the scientific sessions. Therefore this meeting will provide an invaluable opportunity for younger participants to present their work to a friendly external audience made by the most representative scientists of the field. A poster session will enable everyone to show their results. The best posters will be awarded. Some bursary to pay the congress fees will be available for under 35 y.o. scientists.
