Postdoctoral Position in Membrane Structural and Functional Biology

A BBSRC-funded position is available immediately in Professor Adrian Goldman’s 
laboratory at the University of Leeds

Project Title:  The integral membrane H+-pumping pyrophosphatase from the 
malaria parasite: a new drug target

This position is to study the structure and function of integral membrane 
H+-pumping pyrophosphatase, aiming to determine the full pumping mechanism and 
to use the structure for drug design, aiming to find molecules that 
specifically inhibit this novel pump and so affect malarial and other protozoan 
parasites’ infectivity. The project combines production purification with 
crystallisation, crystallography and electrophysiological measurements to 
determine the structure and mechanism.

You will work in the multidisciplinary School of Biomedical Sciences, which 
includes biochemists and physicists, and as part of the Astbury Centre for 
Structural Molecular Biology. You will be supervised by Professor Adrian 
Goldman (SBMS), and the work will involve close collaboration with the 
University of Helsinki (Dr Henri Xhaard and Professor Seppo Meri) and with Drs. 
Roman Tuma and Sarah Harris at the University of Leeds.

You will be a highly motivated individual with a strong basis in 
microbiology/pathology/structura biology, and experience in working with 
membrane proteins. You will have a PhD (or be close to completion) and have 
previous experience of protein expression and purification, tissue culture and 
ideally experience of working with biosafety level 2 pathogens.
