Any attachment can contain malicious code, so just blocking pdf’s won’t solve 
the problem. Maybe the bulletin board administrators could look into a good 
virus-scanner to get rid this kind of emails.

However, so far gentle reminders by board members kept this bulletin board 
remarkably free of spam, politics and insulting language, so currently I do not 
(yet) see a need for more stringent measures. In fact, the reactions to the 
fishing emails generated much more email traffic than the emails themselves.

Article requests can always be dealt with off list, unless they're open access, 
in which case providing a link would be a better option for publishers, authors 
and uninterested recipients.

I think it's a win-win scenario.
